The Messy Middle of Achieving Goals

We’re living in chaos at the moment, or at least it feels that way: because our en-suite bathroom is being re-modelled. This is something we’ve wanted to get done for a long time, but now the time is here, I’m struggling with the reality of what that desire (aka, goal) actually entails.

I’m at a loss to understand how such a small room has impacted our day-to-day routines so negatively.

Here’s just the short list:

• There seems to be dust and mess everywhere – from the room itself, through the house and right out into the back garden where the waste rubble is accumulating.
• We now have the use of one less toilet and shower – who knew this could be so inconvenient?
• The noise from the banging, scraping and general crashing of debris hitting the floor.
• Floor space being taken up in the dining room and garage to house the new kit that’s waiting to be fitted…

I needed to write today. It felt like an overwhelming urge that had to be addressed, but when I opened up the program on my computer I drew a blank because I had no idea of what it was I wanted to write about.

Lately I’ve been writing a lot about productivity – maybe because I’ve been feeling that my productivity isn’t where I want it to be, which is true. It’s like I’ve been searching for ideas to enhance my own productivity and sharing those ideas and experiences with you.

I was introduced to the Morning Pages via Julia Cameron’s Book “The Artist’s Way” and it’s the time I spend ‘with myself’ to really hear what’s going on in my head. Sometimes during these sessions solutions also come through and sometimes it’s just an opportunity to vent without needing to find a solution.

Today I’m sharing with you some of the themes that have appeared on my morning pages with additional thoughts and quotes. Doing this can take the process to a whole new level of understanding and growth, and also might make you consider whether the morning pages are something you might be interested in doing.

Comfort Zones – A Different View

A Different View on Comfort Zones

We often think of comfort zones, and more specifically getting out of them, as something that we do to grow. We see it as something difficult and challenging, as if we’re not quite up to the change we want to make and that it will somehow make us feel worse before we feel better.

For example, taking up a regular fitness routine when the most you’ve done recently is the school “run” or maybe you want to improve your public speaking, but, frankly, you’re scared to speak up in a small group, leave alone a roomful of strangers.

But these are examples of stretches outside of your comfort zone, which, although the overall outcome is expected to be positive, the initial steps are scary, difficult or even menacing.

5 Ways To Improve Your Life

As I pondered whether to write about ways to improve your life, I was hesitant, because of course, the subject is huge! So big in fact, that if you google it, you’ll returns billions of results!!

That’s a lot of people out there trying to find ways to improve their lives.

The chances are, that like me, you are one of them. And why wouldn’t you be? Who doesn’t want more fun and fulfilment in their lives?

But that still left me with the question of what exactly to write about, so in the end I plumped for 5 things that, if I were asked, would be things I’d like to improve in my life. Frankly, it was an easy place to start.

I haven’t written these things in any particular order, because there is no particular order as to how they apply to you or me. I’m also mindful of the fact that as you improve one area of your life, it will spill over into other areas and you will be drawn to make further improvements in other aspects of your life.

Who Am I?

Who Am I?

Where you are is a result of who you were. But where you go depends entirely on who you choose to be.

It took me a long time to understand that my results in life up until this point are a direct result of who I had become in the preceding years and months.

I remember reading words similar to the ones above and not getting it. I just didn’t understand that we ‘become’ someone else as time moves on, created and affected by the things we do, experience and learn.

What Does That Even Mean?

It’s strange, isn’t it, because we quite easily use phrases that actually articulate that we ‘get it’, even though, as with me, we may not. Here are a few of mine:

• I am a wife, mother, daughter, sibling (easy)
• I am an accountant (fairly easy)
• I am a writer (difficult)
• I am a life coach (very difficult)
