In my last blog post I wrote about my 2016 goals review and promised that I would fully articulate my 2017 goals and also go public on them. I’ve learned that if I don’t do this, then my progress can have more of a splatter-gun effect, with distractions easily taking me away from the important stuff. So, with this in mind, I’ve spent a few hours looking at what I want to achieve in 2017 and have listed my goals below.
As in previous years, I’ve used the Wheel of Life template to get a visual representation of where I am now. This helps me prioritise the areas that need most attention or that I’m most drawn to, after all, it’s pointless setting out to achieve goals that don’t really interest me!
My 2017 Goals
The list below isn’t written in any particular order.
Goal | Deadline |
Fun & Travel | 31 December 2017 |
You’ll recall from my earlier blog Making Planning Fun, that we had challenged ourselves to fill a sealed jar with places (in the UK) we’d like to visit in 2017. Well, on New Year’s Eve we emptied the jar out to reveal all the places that were up for visits in 2017. It was a fun exercise and since we weren’t going out on NYE, it made for a nice evening! We spent some time whittling the list down to something manageable and have come up with the following list of day-trips, weekend-trips and a potential longer summer holiday.
Day/Evening Trips | |
Various walking trips including coastal, castles, countryside and a reservoir.
Visits to Food Festivals and/or Christmas markets.
Live shows playing in our locality.
Weekends/Overnight Trips
London | |
Royal Tunbridge Wells | |
Mystery Trip (this is in a sealed envelope and I have to wait to find out what it is!) 🙂
Bristol including a show to see Rag’n’Bone Man (so looking forward to this!)
Caernarfon Castle & Snowdonia
The Eden Project | |
Main Trip | |
Scotland & Lochs, possibly including boat hire!
Health and Fitness |
30 June 2017 |
To achieve my goal weight of 9 ½ stone (133lbs)
To improve my fitness to be able to complete my Contribution challenge (below) with ease.

Personal Growth | |
In the past I’ve attempted to read x number of books in 12 months, but generally haven’t achieved it. This year I’m changing the criteria to better reflect what is actually doable, so my reading goal this year is to read for 3 ½ hours per week (this is half an hour per day, but a weekly target will work better, I think) | R & O |
Attend (in person or virtually) at least 1 course in support of my goals | 31 December 2017 |
Commit to a Weekly review and a monthly round-up of activities related to my goals | R & O |
Re-introduce meditation as part of my daily routine | R & O |
Contribution | |
To participate in a fitness-related charity event | 30 September 2017 |
To continue to support the two charities I currently contribute to | R & O |
Relationships | |
Maintain and improve contact with family and friends. | R & O |
Remember and celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. | R & O |
Finances | |
Re-state our net-worth position (update the spreadsheet) and work to increase our net worth by at least 10% | Update by 31/1/17, then 31 December 2017 |
That should be enough to keep me busy during 2017!
Whether I put these goals together or not, time will pass and life will happen. Without this kind of focus, the life that happens might not be what I want it to be (or even an approximation of it), but with focus, effort and application, there should be a whole lot more fun and achievement in 2017!
I’ll keep a running list of my progress updates here 🙂

You’ve set some amazing goals for this year. I love how well thought out they are. These all seem very doable and I’m looking forward to your success this year. I’ll be tuning in for your updates for sure.

Thanks Aaron 🙂 . I spent quite a bit of time working through what I wanted to achieve for 2017, and I think this is a good reflection of what I’d like to achieve. Travel in particular has always been a priorty, so as you can see, there’s a lot of it planned for this year. Thanks for the support and the vote of confidence!
